  • 3. Just a dance? That doesn't seem like it would be very bad.
  • 1. I didn't realize the relationship with the natives became hostile again.
  • 2. Yes. They did a Ghost Dance, which was a spiritual awakening that prophesied the specific things and the return to their old ways and traditions, where Natives ruled the land. They wanted to be superior in the West. This idea was a little intense when you think about it.
  • 1. Oh but those dances triggered something. It was their motivation, but we soon struck it down with the Wounded Knee Massacre, where a group of soldiers shot at a group of Sioux Indians at the Pine Ridge Reservation. Many wound up dead. The whole thing was a little wild.
  • 2. Wow. I never heard of any of all these battles out West.
  • 1. And that wasn't all. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a military decision to attack the Native Americans camped in the valley of the Little Bighorn. Many powerful Native American leaders took part in this battle. It also resulted in the death of General George Custer and his men, after he decided to attack early in his own way. There was a lot going on.
  • 2. That sounds brutal. How come you went out West in the first place?
  • 1. Well actually, I headed up after I heard about the discoveries of gold, which caused a rapid influx of settlers in western territories. This included California and South Dakota. Many of these gold seekers didn't strike treasures, though.
  • 2. Ohh. All of that was chaotic.
  • 1. Wow. Thanks for telling us all about it Dad. It sounded so crazy out there- and definitely wild!
  • 2. That's for sure.
