- Racial discrimination had been attacked. The Civil Rights Act allowed any citizen of every race or color to go to places such as theaters, any form of public amusement, public conveyances on land or water. The legislation made it a crime for someone to deny any enjoyment from colors or race.
- Homer Plessy was a mulatto (7/8) white male who seated himself in a white compartment leading the conductor to challenge him and then was arrested and charged with violating the state law on June 7, 1892.
- The Louisiana separate car act of 1890 prohibited the blacks and whites being in the same vehicle. They had to have their own sections. If they didn't follow these laws then they would be faced with a $25 fine or a 20 day jail sentence. There was on expectation although, the black nurses attending white children were able to write in white compartments. Then, the supreme court decided the law was unconstitutional because it applied to interstate level.
