- In 1776 right after the British abandoned Boston, they had to come up with a new plan. The German's came up with the plan to capture New York City then move up to Massachusetts to destroy the American rebellion.
- We need to retreat.
- Retreat!!
- While the American's were moving to New York the Declaration of Independence came out stating that we are free and independent states. This gave hope and confidence to the soldiers and showed that the colony's support was on their side.
- Slaves started questioning that if "all men are created equal" meant that would mean an end to slavery. This caused many slaves to become patriots later on in the war (once they were allowed to fight). To go against this the British promised that all slaves that fought for them gained freedom. During this time Americans started realizing that slavery was wrong, and states took steps to end slavery.
- A battle in New York led Americans to realize their Army wasn't good enough. They ended up having to retreat from the battle.
- The Americans had little hope as it got cold, they had little food, and no clothes. Many soldier went hope leaving General Washington a few thousand men left.
