- Hey Dad! I just came from school. We learnt abo- What are you doing?
- Well, I'm planting crops. You do want vegetables to eat right? I'm ensuring that I and my family get enough food to eat
- Sure!
- Oh nice! Can I help?
- Anyway, I was telling that today we learnt about subsistence agriculture in school. I knew most of it already but I learnt some new things also!
- Well, yes. One is shifting cultivation. It is actually practiced by tribal groups living in dense forests. Its also called the slash and burn agriculture. This is because the people cut trees and burn them. They then spread this burned matter in the soil. Once the soil becomes infertile, they leave the land.
- Did you know that there are 3 types of subsistence agriculture?
- Is this some kind of a test? But to answer your question, yes I do. There is Intensive subsistence agriculture. This is practiced in densely populated areas. Here farmers make optimum use of the land they have and they use very simple tools. Ok, Let us go home. It looks like it is going to rain.
- Yes! Do you know any other?
- Ok! By the way though dad, you did miss one. There is nomadic herding too. This is practiced by nomadic people who graze their animals on the land. The herders move from place to place searching for water and food supply.
