- The theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is that blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negative consequences. One example that shows this theme is when the resident of Maple Street treated Les Goodman poorly because his car started up all by itself when the power was out in the neighborhood. The residents of Maple Street called Les an oddball and accused him of being the monster from another planet. Charlie would call him and his whole family an oddball. The neighborhood believed Charlie and lost trust in Les even though they have known him for a long time. This then caused Les to lose trust in his neighbors. Another example that supports this theme is when the Woman 1 stated she would sometimes see Les starting up at the sky as if he was waiting for something to happen when she went to bed late at night, This may indicate that Les is to blame for the power outage and is hoping for this outage or possibly in cahoots with aliens which caused the outage. In the story, it explains how the neighbors turned against Les even though they have known him for a long time and became scared of him and believing the stories from others. They would even back away from Les when Les approached them. This shows that the residents of Maple Street are suspicious of him and that the neighbors have lost their trust in Les and ending their friendship based on what others said or saw him do before the power outage. Another example that supports this theme is when Charlie and the residents of Maple Street started to also blame Steve as Charlie started alleging that he saw Steve talk to the aliens on his radio set in the middle of the night. Charlie told Steve, Go ahead, Steve. What kind of a 'radio set' you workin' on? I never seen it. Neither has anyone else. Who you talk to on that radio set? And who talks to you? The neighbors believed Charlie and blamed Steve as well. They let their fears overcome their friendship with Les and now trying fear has got to point out any idiosyncrasies they can think of Steve or Les or believing what others say about them. They also fear that if they don't believe then they may also get blamed for the power outage, too. This leads to fights between the residents and an end of friendship amongst the residents. In conclusion, the above is evidence that the theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is blaming others and trying to find a scapegoat can lead to negatives consquences,
