- Carol and her mom meet Mr. Linden at a general store. Carol asks if she can borrow a book from Mr. Linden's house. Carol's friend says that Mr. Linden reads the same book, page, and paragraph every day.
- CLIMAX
- Mr. Linden, I noticed that book by the window and it looked very good! Is it okay that I was reading it?
- I noticed the words on the page changed though.
- Carol goes to Mr. Linden's house to pick out a book. She notices a book near the window called "Tales From a Dark Sea", there is no author listed. It is the same book that Mr. Linden was reading. Carol opens the book to the page mark and reads it.
- Falling Action
- Josiah Linden
- The second time she goes to his library, the same book is by the window. Carol picks the book up, and sees the page mark is on the same page. Curious, she opens the book and finds that the words on the page have changed!
- Resolution
- I will never pick up that book again!
- Carol decides to talk to Mr. Linden about the book. He says that some books are better off never read. Carol doesn't really listen to him, and thinks that he is wrong. Soon after, Mr. Linden dies.
- You shouldn't be reading that book! Some books you know, are better off never being read.
- After Mr. Linden dies, his will says to make his house a place for aged seaman, and his books be sold to a dealer. Carol asks the dealer if she can have a keepsake for Mr. Linden, the dealer says yes. Carol picks "Tales From a Dark Sea", and goes home to read it.
- I wish Mr. Linden hadn't died.
- Carol realizes that Mr. Linden was right and that she will never be able to stop reading that book. Carol also realizes that Mr. Linden had kept reading that book until the day he died, and the same thing would happen to her unless she stopped reading it then.
