  • The Speaker The speaker begins the story in the middle of the night thinking and he is "weak and weary"(Line 1). The significance of the speaker is that the reader is introduced to a narrator who might not be in his right mind because he's weary ,and he is in still up at midnight thinking about something.
  • Setting The story takes place in the narrators chamber. However the events take place on a "midnight dreary" during the month of December (line 1). The narrator remembered it as a "bleak December" (line 8). The setting gives a cold uneasy feeling when using words like bleak to describe the setting.
  • Symbols Ravens are synonymous with death, evil, and with the supernatural. The narrator says that the bird comes from "Night's Plutonian Shore" or coming from the underworld (Line 58).
  • Imagery In the beginning of the story the narrator hears tapping at his door, but later in the story where he hears a "tapping somewhat louder than before"(line 38). The description of the tapping throughout the story can leave the reader imagining the sound of a tapping at a window. The sounds of tapping at the window continues the suspense that has been built throughout.
  • Tap Tap Tap
  • Nevermore (line 59)
  • Refrain The Raven only responds with one word to each question the narrator asks. The refrain gives even more suspense to the story because the audience is unsure of if the bird is real or if it is of supernatural origin.
  • Theme The theme of darkness is throughout the story. With the time of midnight, and the fact that the narrator is going through a dark time in his life. He is grieving the death of someone dear to him so his mind is at a dark place. Also the theme of darkness is included with the Raven, and just the concept of death.
  • Darkness and nothing more (Line 26).
