  • In 1912, meteorologist Alfred Wegener came up with the theory of Continental drift, which was heavily opposed at the time. He believed that the continents had once all formed a single landmass called Pangea.
  • No I don't agree
  • Alfred's theory wouldn't be proved right until Marie Tharp came along. She is now a well known geologist and oceanographic cartographer who helped create the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. But first here is her story.
  • Marie Tharp's interest began when she was just a young girl traveling with her father who collected soil samples for maps. Her interest in geology led her to get a master's degree in the subject and a position at the University of Columbia in 1947.
  • At Columbia, Marie Tharp worked as an assistant to Bruce Heezen. Bruce was a geology expert who was "collecting thousand of depth measurements across the atlantic ocean". He used what we call sonar today to collect data. Sadly Maria had to collect the data since she could not go to sea since she was a women.
  • Sorry no women allowed have fun at the lab!
  • "There is something here! I just know it!"
  • As Marie converted the data to profils of the ocean floor she saw in all of her "drawings" evidence of Alfred's Continental drift theory. Heezen did not believe most of what Marie saw and dismissed her theories. Meanwhile Howard foster had a similar diagram of where Earthquakes were located and they were in and around the same place Maria drew her ocean ridge. Heezen could no longer deny what Maria saw.
  • Their findings were reported in 1957 but were still opposed. Explorer Jacques Cousteau doubted them so much he went on an expectation and filmed the bottom the sea. His footage proved Marie's theories as fact which has given way to our modern understanding of plate tectonics.
  • !! Wow the Continents are really spreading apart !!
