How does the character look after moving to Mallard, she's had every bad name associated with her blackness tagged onto her back. Getting ready for the first day of school was hard. Bennett writes, "Bright colors looked vulgar against dark skin, everyone said, but she refused to put her daughter in drab olive greens or greys...Maybe pink was too showy. Maybe she'd already ruined her daughter's chances of fitting in by dressing her up like a department store doll" (Bennett 40). The color of Jude's skin was brought up almost every time her name was mentioned. The way she looked caused her whole childhood to take a turn for the worse once she arrived in Mallard. Kids called her mean names like blueblack and monkey for a majority of her childhood
Something She's Good atRunning. Without a doubt, running track is obviously one of Jude's passions. Bennett writes, "Still, she ran. She ran because she loved it, because she wanted to be good at something, because her father had run himself at Ohio State, and when she laced up her cleats, she thought about him " Bennett 89). Running track helped her in so many ways in this book. It make her feel closer to the father that she was away from and it even got her into college
Who she lovedReese is one of the people that Jude feels the most comfortable around. They clicked almost immediately. During one of their heart-to-heart moments, Reese asked, "'What do you think of all this?' he said. 'I don't know,' she said.' I've never heard anything like it.' But that wasn't exactly true. She'd always known that it was possible to be two different people in one lifetime, or maybe it was possible for some." (Bennet 105). Being around Reese helped Jude realize that different is not always bad even though it is perceived that way. He helped her get to know herself and the two were able to find love in differences.
Where are They Going?A giant step that Jude took in her life was as following her dream to go to med school. Bennett writes,"Rejections mostly, but maybe one yes. You only need one yes to be happy. Medical school was like love in that regard.. Some days her chances seemed promising, and other days she hated herself for clinging to this ridiculous dream" (Bennett 206). She knew that following her dream would seem crazy and unattainable, but she kept trying . She didn't let her negative thoughts stop her from following her dream and with the help and support of Reese, it was a tad bit easier
What Kind of Person Are TheySometimes Jude can be kind of hidden from the world and it causes her to carry that into her close and personal relationships. When Reese found out why she was working, he reacted by saying, "'I´m not mad,' he said. 'I just don't like feelin like some charity case.' 'You know I don't think of you like that.' 'You gotta tell me things,' he said. 'You're so hidden away sometimes' Maybe that's what drew them together. Maybe this was the only way they knew how to love..." (Bennett 210). Of course Jude cares about Reese, but she tends to hide certain intentions and thoughts because thatś all she really knew growing up as a dark girl in a light town.
What Actions Do They Take?Jude went her whole life wondering about her mom's long lost twin. When she saw her, she took a huge chance at connecting with her. In the text, it says, "'My mama,' Jude took a breath. ' My mama's name is Desiree Vignes.' Now Stella turned toward her. 'Who the hell are you?' she said quietly. 'I told you my mama--' 'who are you? What are you doing here? I don't understand.' When she finally came into her presence, she couldn't let Stella slip away from her as she did to her mother so long ago. She took the chance of telling her who she was even if it meant that Stella may resent her for it.
