- Primary goal was to ensure mutual friendly relations between the U.S. and the nations of Latin America.
- The Good Neighbor Policy lowered tariff walls between the U.S. and Latin America and resulted in freer trade.;U.S
- The policy's success was measured in part by the rapidity with which most Latin American states rallied to the Allies during World War II.
- The good neighbor policy- The United States economy was struggling after the stock market crash and they wanted to restore trade with Latin America. In the past, the United States had occupied many of the countries with their military and wanted to repair relations with the countries.
- The Platt Amendment was dissolved and lower tariffs (esp. on sugar) improved the economy. The loss of US military control allowed a dictatorship to rise.
- Renegotiated the Panama Canal Treaty (1936, US could not interfere in Panamanian politics) and the US yielded the right to seize land around the Panama Canal. The country gained greater independence as a result and the Canal's annual rent went up
