  • Dasartha was Ayodha's King, and he had three wives and four sons. Rama was the eldest child, and his mother's name was Kausalya. Dasaratha's second and favorite wife, Queen Kaikeyi, carries Bharata. The other two were twins named Lakshmana and Shatrughna, who were born to Sumitra. The ruler's daughter in the neighboring city was known as Sita. When it came time for Sita to choose her bridegroom (during a ceremony known as a swayamvara), princes from all over the land were asked to string a massive bow that no one could lift. However, as Rama picked it up, he not only strung but also broke the bow. Sita, seeing this, indicated her choice of Rama as her husband by placing a garland around his neck.
  • After a few years, King Dasaratha decided to hand over the throne to his eldest son Rama and depart to the forest. Everyone seemed happy, except Queen Kaikeyi, who wanted her son Bharata to rule. Because of an oath Dasaratha had taken years before, she persuaded the king to agree to exile Rama for fourteen years and crown Bharatha, despite the king's pleas not to face Rama, and it was Queen Kaikeyi who informed Rama of the King's decree. Rama, who was always obedient, was content to be banished to the forest. Sita and Lakshmana accompanied him on his journey into exile.
  • Rama and Lakshmana once wounded a rakshasas (demon) princess who attempted to seduce Rama. She returned to see her brother Ravana, Lanka's ten-headed ruler. Ravana devised a plan to abduct Sita in retribution after hearing about her unparalleled beauty. To entice Sita, he sent one of his demons disguised as a magical golden deer.
  • Rama and Lakshmana went to find the deer in order to please her. But first, they drew a protective circle around Sita and told her she was safe as long as she didn't step outside the circle. Ravana appeared as a holy man begging aims after Rama and Lakshmana had left.
  • Rama then sought the assistance of a group of monkeys who offered to help him find Sita. Hanuman, the monkey band's commander, can fly because his father is the wind. He flew to Lanka and soon found Sita in the groove, comforting her. Ravana's men caught Hanuman and told him to wrap his tail in cloth and set it on fire. Hanuman escaped with his tail on fire and hopped from housetop to housetop, setting Lanka on fire. He then flew back to Rama to inform him of Sita's location.
  • Rama, Lakshmana and the Army of the monkeys built a dam from the tip of India to Lanka and then crossed Lanka where a cosmic battle broke out. Rama killed several of Ravana's brothers and finally faced the ten-headed Ravana. He killed Ravana, free Sita, and after Sita demostrated her purity, they returned to Ayodha, where Bharat returned the crown to him.
