- Grandma, we are supposed to explain our cultures history at school. Can you tell me about ours please?
- Of course grandson. Africans were taken from their land and brought to America as slaves
- Slaves worked in the fields and had white slave masters. They were whipped and raped until they had no identity.
- It is important that I tell you this because your history books won't. You need to know your black history.
- Slaves were finally set free by the 13th Amendment but still had little to no rights. They were accused of crimes they did not commit so they would be put into jail and be forced to do labor.
- Now you can sit in classrooms with kids of other races because of your ancestors that fought for you. I want you to be proud of your brown skin and curly hair and find strength in your Black history.
- As the oppression of black people continued, there was a rebirth of black culture called the Harlem Renaissance. They found community and identity in tough times.
- There were also new forms of literature and new genres of music such as jazz.
- Following the rebirth of black culture was the Civil Rights era. Of course you know MLK giving his speech I have a dream but I want you to know about others that they don't teach you about like Angela Davis and Malcolm X
