- In this scene, Lyddie encounters a bear in her cabin! This is Person vs Nature because in the book, she has to get all her family to safety in order to protect them from a wild creature destroying their home. This shows bravery in Lyddie and introduces the idea that Lyddie is courageous.
- In this scene, Lyddie encounters a strange man in her home which turns out to be a runaway slave named Ezekial. This is Person Vs Society because Ezekial was actually well educated before being a slave. This shows that not all slaves are uneducated unlike what most believed during this time period.
- In this scene, Betsy and Amelia are fighting over signing the petition for less hours of work. Lyddie doesn't want this to happen because she needs the money to provide for her family. This is Person vs Person because it shows two sides of an argument between two people and how one may believe something the other doesn't. This created conflict between the girls.
