- Why can’t I be as thin and straight as a boy? Perhaps then my father would not have to leave. As an older son, I could have made a living for my family and then we wouldn't be in this mess of debt.
- a bear breaks into the cabin which frightens everyone but lyddie tells them to stay calm and gets everyone up where the bear cannot come. The person is Lyddie and nature is the bear and Lyddie is trying to solve the conflict by driving the bear out.
- Ms. Cutler thinks that she is a poor peasant girl, but Lyddie tells her that she is the one that will work there. Nevertheless, Ms. Cutler still sees her as a peasant because of how she looks. This is an example of a Person vs. Society conflict because Lyddie fights against society that thinks she is a peasant based on her appearance.
- Lyddie is sitting on a stool in the corner of the room imagining how her life would be different if she was a boy. She thinks that if she was a boy then her dad would not have left and they may probably not be in debt. the character doubts herself and thinks that because she is a girl she cannot provide.
