- About two weeks had passed by and on a beautiful Monday morning, the teacher Mrs. Lee walked up to the class with her stern face, as she always does, and told the class. “I am assigning a group project.” Alex and Nia turned to each other with a smile as they both looked at Alex across the room to see if he was thinking the same thing. But Alex had his head down, so they went up to him. “Hey, do you want to be in our group for the project?” They asked helpfully. Alex spoke back in an almost shouting voice. “Don’t you get it? I don’t want to be part of your group anymore, I don’t need your help! Take a hint!”
- Once Alex took a breath and looked around, he saw the teacher looking right at him, not looking happy. He knew he was in trouble and followed the teacher outside. Mrs. Lee looked at Alex and said, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12” “Is that a quote from the Bible?” He replied. “Yes, but it is not just some words in a book. We have to live by it.
- “Being independent does not mean we have to be alone. Do you understand?” “Yeah, I think so,” Alex said back with an unsteady voice. “Ok, you can go now.” “Ok.” While Alex walked away, e convinced himself that needing people made him weak, nevertheless, he couldn't stop thinking about what she said to him.
- In the following days, Alex’s friends stopped trying to talk to him. He hurt them when he yelled at them when they were just trying to be good friends. This made Alex feel even more lonely. But he tried to cover up the pain by distracting himself with more work. He even convinced the teacher to allow him to do the big group project himself on top of the extra work he gave himself. However, things weren’t going as well as Alex planned out to be. Without his friends Alex was sad. This made it hard to do his work, and soon enough he got really behind in school.
- Alex realized something that day. He decided he needed to apologize to his friends. Maybe what Mrs.Lee said was right? Maybe you can’t do everything by yourself. God made humans need each other and grow off each other. We need one another like we do the air to breathe. That does not make us weak, it makes us human, and that is beautiful! Alex knew what he had to do next.
- The next day at school, he walked up to Amber and Josh. “Hello.” Alex said softly as they both looked at the teacher confused. “I wanted to apologize to you guys. I realized I was a really bad friend to you guys. I am truly sorry for letting my ego get in the way of our friendship. I hope you guys can forgive me?” Josh and Amber paused, but then all of a sudden, their serious faces turned into a smile. “Of course, we are best friends, you know!” Alex was so happy and gave them a big hug. “Thank you.” He responded in a whisper while hugging. The End
