  • November 4th, The king crossed the bridge and led his troops into Reading. On November 28th, he retreated to Oxford which became the Royalist headquarters.
  • He left Oxford in November 1642, leaving a garrison of 2,000 foot and a regiment of horses, with Sir Arthur Aston as Governor.
  • 13th April 1643, the Earl of Essex, who was a Parlementarian, camped at the western side of Oxford with 16,000 foot soldiers, 3,000 horse and siege guns. This stopped Reading sending reinforcements
  • April 16th, the the Parliamentary army opened fire on Oxford. On April 18th, Royalists were spotted on Oxfordshire hills. the leader saw that Caversham bridge was occupied, and proceeded to Reading
  • On April 22nd a messenger from oxford managed to deliver the news that help was on its way, But the parliamentarians caught him on return.
  • On the day the King decided to attack, Fielding held out a white flag to surrender. The cavaliers attcked the Parlementarians but were shot down due to the narro bridge. A storm broke out and the Roundheads were victorious.
