  • The population of New York City in 1712 was about 8,000 people, and 1,000 of them were slaves. Slaves didn't have as strict rules in the North as they did in the South. So slaves were able to freely communicate with each other even as they were on different plantations. So this could easily create a plan for revolt. That is exactly what happened on the night of April 6, 1712, where slaves were out for revenge. Lets go back in time and take a look.
  • Hi, I'm Mikyla and I will be showing what happened here in New York City in 1712.
  • Everyone: YES WE ARE READY IT IS GOING DOWN TONIGHT THOSE TERRIBLE CHRISTIAN ARE GOING DOWN!
  • Remember, THE FIRE ON THE OUTHOUSE MEANS ITS GO TIME. GET your WEAPONS READY.
  • *Loudly Whispers while working,* "DO YOU GUYS Remember THE PLAN FOR TONIGHT? It's TIME TO GAIN OUR FREEDOM!"
  • The Fire has now started and that's the signal, it's time for all of us slaves to get ready to get back at those terrible white people.
  • What is going on out here! Who set my outhouse on fire! I bet you it was them there slaves! Can't Trust any of em!
  • The slave owner Peter was then shocked to see that his slaves had drawn their weapons and were ready to fire at him. Most owners panicked and went to alert others
  • The slaves then fired and went forward with their attack. 9 white people died and even more were injured. This attack was very chaotic, with about anywhere from 30-100 slaves who participated.
  • Consequences of this attack were very violent. Of the approximately 40 slaves brought to trial, 18 were acquitted, and a few others were pardoned. The rest were brutally executed: four were burned alive; one was crushed by a wheel; one was kept in chains until he starved to death; a pregnant woman was kept alive until she gave birth and was then executed
