  • The school I made. (Khushal School)
  • Malala Yousafzai introduces herself and gives background information about her life. She says she's born in Mingora, in northwest Pakistan. She is a member of the Yousafzai, a large Pashtun tribe, who practice the Pashtunwali code of hospitality and honor. Her father take pride over her birth, which is uncommon in a country where girls are not important. Malala introduces her small family.
  • CHAPTER 4
  • You aren't covered enough.
  • Malala explains her father's background, with the story of her father competing in a public speaking competition to overcome his stutter and win his father's approval. Malala details the military coup and rule of General Zia, the man responsible for Pakistan's Islamization, in her view of Pakistan's past. Religion takes center stage under his regime, and women's rights are restricted.
  • CHAPTER 5
  • I won't ever steal again.
  • Malala's mother is uneducated, as are millions of Pakistani women. Her father, Ziauddin, is committed to pursuing his own education, despite financial problems. Malala's father was able to go to college because of his wife's relatives. Ziauddin then later starts to make a school. Malala's life starts to change after 9/11 happened.
  • CHAPTER 6
  • Some kids cannot go to school because they need to provide for their family.
  • Malala is told that she is exactly like her Baba. Wise and funny, Malala is close to her. Malala visits her family a lot, when she was a teenager she got criticized by her male cousin for not "covering up". For the women who live in Shangla they must cover their face for men who aren't family nor talk to them.
  • Malala stole her friends jewelry as revenge and eventually told her parents. After that Malala promised herself that she would never steal or wear jewelry again.
  • Malala's father explains to Malala that some children cannot go to school because they have to find food for their family or they have to sell things to earn things for their family. Malala wishes that one day she can help the world.
