- Maria the Librarian is concerned about her wages.
- 1. It's been 5 years working at this library and I have been earning the same wages, not even a little raise whatsoever
- 2. Is this even fair? I must raise this concerns with my manager about this.
- Maria meets up with her manager Mrs. Khumalo to discuss her problem.
- 3. No Mrs. Khumalo it's not that I'm ungrateful but how am I supposed to afford the expenses that go up everyday yet my salary is of years ago?
- 1. Mrs. Khumalo I called you over to discuss about my wages. I have been earning the same amount for 5 years without any increase. How is that possible?
- 4. I believe you are ungrateful! we gave you an opportunity when you needed it the most and this is how you thank us?!? There is no salary raise you will get here.
- 2.Hawu Maria I thought you were happy here working with us, what is it that you are asking me now? why are you being ungrateful?
- Maria went online that day and found out that there is a trade union for librarians which is the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) .
- Mary is upset about Mrs. Khumalo's response to her grievance.
- 1. I didn't expect that from Mrs. Khumalo, I thought we would come to a solution together but now she is forcing me to taking the matters further, but how can I do that?
- 2. Maybe I should join a trade union. I must search one that is going to be suitable for my career option.
- Maria meets up with the trade union organiser to discuss her grievance.
- 3. That is very unfair Mary. I will look into this and I will get back to you as soon as I resolve this matter.
- 1. Welcome Maria, thank you for joining our association I assure you you will be any matter that concerns you and any of your grievances and enquiries. How may I assist you today?
- 4. Thank you so much Ma'am, I look forward to meeting up with you again. hopefully by then the matter will be resolved.

- 2. Thank you Ma'am. I only have one problem in my workplace and it's about my wages. I have never received any increase in my salary but I have been employed for 5 years.

- 4. I now understand why she raised this. I shall do right by her and offer her an increase of 3.5%. thank you so much for meeting up with me and making me understand.
- The trade union organiser of LIASA on behalf of Maria meets up with Mrs. Khumalo to discuss Maria's grievance about her wages.
- 2. I told Maria very well that there will be no increase for her and that is final.
- 1. Mrs. Khumalo thank you for meeting up with me. A grievance was raised to you and you did not attend to very well.
- 3. You do know that- that is unfair and illegal according to the LRA? I suggest you increase her wages by at least 3.5% as she has been an employee for 5 years. The cost of living has risen and the salary she earns affords the cost of living of 5 years ago.
- 1. Maria as I've said to you on our previous meeting that we'd meet after I have resolved your matter. I have done so. I'll let Mrs. Khumalo discuss on the decison we reached.
- The trade union organiser and Mrs. Khumalo meet up with Maria to inform her about the good news.
- 2. Thank you. Firstly Maria, I would like to apologise to you for how I handled your matter. I have decided to increase your salary by 5.3% starting this month end going forward.
- 3.Thank you so much to the both of you. I am so happy with this outcome. I am so grateful to LIASA also.
