- The Indians capture Mary Rowlandson and her three children. They take her to a vacant home that was deserted by the English. She is separated from her husband and will very soon be separated from her children.
- Mary is with one of her children, who is wounded. The Indians carry the child horseback as they travel into the Wilderness.
- Her child passes away. Mary is sent back to her Masters Wigwam. The Indians bury her child.
- The Indians kill a pregnant dear and they not only eat the mother, but the fawn inside. They are "kind" enough to share the fawn with Mary. Other than that, she is not allowed to partake in the same luxuries they experience.
- Mary observes one of the Native women dress in their cultural garments and accessories. She is able to fully experience the native culture and traditions.
- Rather than referring to the population as the Indians, they are seen as the enemy. She reflects upon her experience as a captive and is aware of the poor and inhuman treatment she receiving. The Indians often boasted about their victories over the British.
