  • Sure Mitch. We learnt about the micrometer screw gauge. It's a measuring tool!
  • Hey Anisa! I didn't come to class yesterday. Can you fill me in on what I missed?
  • What? Like a ruler?
  • Kind of! It is used to measure really small things though, like a wire.
  • It also has a lot of different parts like the frame, anvil, spindle, lock, sleeve, thimble and ratchet
  • How small can measurements be?
  • Pretty small! The S.D. on most is 0.01 mm and the range is 0-25 mm
  • Oh cool! Who even uses it though?
  • Mechanics and scientists can use it. People doing mechanical arts have great use for it.
  • I'm confused though. How do they use it? How can you get a measurement from it?
  • Well let me put this into steps: first you look at the main scale and determine the last number that can be seen before the cutoff to calculate the main reading, then you look at the vernier scale to determine the second reading by seeing what number lines up perfectly with the line from the main scale and lastly you add the two.
  • 1. main scale reading :16mmvernier reading: 0.32mm answer = 16+0.32= 16.32 mm
  • Can I see some examples!
  • 2. main scale reading: 8.5mmvernier reading: 0.25mmanswer = 8.5m+0.25= 8.75 mm
  • Sure!
