  • Why not!
  • Hey Layla! I know that you graduated college and learnt history so I was wondering if you could tell me a little about how women were treated in the 1800s to the 1900s.
  • During the 1880s, women were treated differently from men because the government believed that men held more power and influence over others than women. So then, women were limited to things that men could do.
  • Oh that is bad!
  • So then in the 1870s, problems in Canada started to rise. The alcohol industry had started growing which had led to issues in homes such as violence, etc. That is when women had formed the Canadian Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The leader of this group was Letitia Youmans. This group worked together to make the government ban the sale of alcohol for good.
  • Oh, did women have voting rights?
  • About that. Only women who were married had voting rights not unmarried women so the WCTU was trying to convince the federal government to let all women vote but sadly there federal bill was was defeated for women to have the right to vote in 1884.
  • But then, Jhon. A Macdonald stood again in the House of Commons and then the federal government decided that the provinces would decide if women were allowed to vote in federal, municipal, and provincial elections!
  • Thank you so much! You gave me so much knowledge about how women were treated during the 1880s to the 1900s.
  • No problem!
