  • We have arrived in Egypt after traveling for so long!

  • In the year 1700 BCE, a man named Abraham lived in Ur, Mesopotamia. At some point, according to the Torah, the Hebrew Bible, Abraham made a covenant with God. In this agreement, Canaan would belong to Abraham's descendants.
  • Pharaoh! Let my people go!
  • No!
  • Jacob, also known as Israel, and his family moved out of Canaan to Egypt because there was a shortage of grain supply in Canaan. When Jacob and his family arrived in Egypt, the Pharaoh soon became uncertain of the Israelites because they were Monotheistic, or believed in only one god. This caused Pharaoh to make all Israelites slaves. The Pharaoh was believed to be the one true god in Egypt, that is why the Pharaoh acted in this manner.
  • These ethics will be important!
  • Moses was a child born into a Israelite family, but was sent down a river by his mother to save him. The Pharaoh’s daughter adopted Moses. God wanted Moses to lead the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land, or Canaan. The Pharaoh declined many times, but God sent down many plagues, and on the tenth plague the Pharaoh finally agreed to let the Israelites go.
  • God sent down a plague when the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt. Finally, on the tenth plague, the Pharaoh decided to let the Israelites flee. The Pharaoh decided to let the people go because the tenth plague made the first born son of every Egyptian family to die. The Passover celebrates the time when the Exodus occurred.
  • The ten Commandments are a set of ethics given to Moses by God. Moses stopped at the foot of Mount Sinai and went up the mountain to meet with God. God then gave Moses the Torah, which contained many laws, including the ten Commandments. The ten commandments are important to religions including Judaism and Christianity because it tells people how to live their lives righteously and fairly.
  • After the Israelites received the ethics from Moses they continued to the Promised Land, or Canaan. But, Moses had sadly died before entering Canaan. So Joshua, his deputy, took his place. When the Israelites finally entered Canaan they conquered the city state of Jericho. Then, the group split apart and settled in different parts of the Promised Land. Many herded sheep, and created terraces along hillsides.
