- Well ladies and gentlemen, Nora has made it to the bonus round of "Math for Cash".
- Omg, I can't believe it, this is so exciting
- Ok, and the bonus question is...... "Explain polynomial long division, and provide 2 examples. One simple and one complex."
- I think I can do this.... Let me just think back to grade 12 math.
- You have 20 minutes to answer the question!
- Polynomial long division is a method used to divide a polynomial by another polynomial., of the same or lower degree. It is essentially the same as long division, but you are dealing with "x". Just like regular division , polynomial division can have a remainder or no remainder. If it has no remainder, it means it is a factor. It also is a great tool to solve other math problems.. For example, we can use it when finding the slant asymptote of a function.
- That answers the first part of the question! Great job. Now, can you explain the steps to solve it?
- You bet I can!
- TThe main steps are:1. Divide the first term of the numerator by the first term of the denominator, and put that in the answer2. Multiply the denominator by that answer, put that below the numerator3. Subtract to make a new polynomial Repeat these steps using the new polynomialLet me show you by doing an example...
