- Good morning, friends my name is Miss A and we will begin class reviewing about cognitive-development theories.
- This theory emphasizes thinking processes and how they change over time.
- A Swiss scientist named Jean Piaget was the earliest and best known cognitive-developmental theorist.
- He came up with four stages of cognitive development. Can anyone remember the different stages?
- Great job how about the second stage?
- The first stage is called Sensorimotor. In this stage a child ages 0-2 years old gains coordination of sense with motor responses and sensory curiosity about the world
- You guys remember so much! Anyone want to try the third stage?
- Imagination and intuition are also strong and abstract thoughts are difficult.
- The second stage is called Preoperational. In this stage a child 2-7 years old uses symbolic thinking which is the use of proper syntax and grammar to express concepts.
- Excellent job! For the fourth stage I will explain it!
- The third one is called Concrete Operational. In this stage a child 7-11 years old is able to attach concepts to concrete situations. Time, space, and quantity can be understood and applied but not independently
- The final stage is called Formal Operational. In this stage a child 11 years old and older can think theoretical, hypothetical, and counterfactual. Strategy and planning becomes possible. As well as concepts learned in one context can be applied to another.
- You guys did amazing with explaining each of the 4 stages of Piaget cognitive development to me and your fellow peers. Lets clean up and get ready for lunch.
