  • Okay class, for today we are going to talk about Cellular Respiration. Can someone tell me what it is?
  • Cellular Respiration is both used in animal and plant cells. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use sunlight to synthesize food from CO2/ H2O.
  • Cellular Respiration is the process in which breaks down glucose to create ATP. The energy can then be made into kinetic energy.
  • Correct! It all starts with the sun/photosynthesis.
  • In Glycolysis, glucose is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate. It occurs in the cytoplasm. These reactions formed2ATP, 2 pyruvate, and 2NADH.
  • Converts glucose into pyruvate and a hydrogen ion, ADP and NADH are formed from the energy released from the process.
  • In Pyruvate Oxidation, pyruvate is transformed into an acetyl group. The resulting acetyl CoA is delivered to the citric acid cycle for further catabolism.
  • Next is the Krebs Cycle, the acetyl group from acetyl CoA is attached to a four-carbon oxaloacetate molecule to form a six-carbon citrate molecule. Through a series of steps, citrate is oxidized, releasing two carbon dioxide molecules for each acetyl group fed into the cycle. From this stage, 6NADH, 2 FADH2, and 2ATP is produced.
  • It has 8 steps
  • Next is the Electron Transport Chain. So, how does it work?
  • In The electron transport chain, electrons are transported from NADH/FADH2 to oxygen through a series of electron transporters embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
  • The end product of cellular respiration is ATP, while the waste products are Carbon dioxide and water.
