- The scene is ironic because the boy is kidnapped, but he is having a really fun time and not scared at all. It creates a surprised effect because nobody would expect the boy to be happy.
- “We’re playing Indian” Line 46 -Bill
- “Oh, I got kind of a pain in my shoulder. I thought sitting up would rest it” Line 102 -narrator
- This is ironic because the boy is basically controlling the two men instead of the other way around. This creates a more humorous tone as the men are acting like children.
- “ You're afraid. you was to be burned at sunrise, and you was afraid he’d do it.” Line 104-105 -Bill
- Just at the moment when I should have been abstracting the $1500 from the box under the tree… Bill was counting out $250 into Dorset’s hand.” Line 328 -Narrator
- This is ironic because the narrator should be getting $1500, but instead they are having to pay $250 to bring the boy back because he is so bad. This creates a humorous effect
