  • 14 September 1975, 50 marchers left Te Hāpua for a Hikoi (Maori land march) to protest about the continuing loss of maroi land. There goal was to march all the way from Te Hāpua to Wellenton to show Bill Rowling (Prime minster of the time) the problem.
  • Leading the Hikoi was a 80-yearold called Whina Cooper, who took six months to plan the march.
  • Waitangi Tribrunal
  • At night, marchers would stop at local maria to rest. There Whina Cooper would explain the purpose the aim and the purpose of the Hikoi.
  • 23 September 1975, the Hikoi reached Auckland and at the time, was the first people who had crossed the Auckland Harber Bridge by foot. About 40,000 more people had join the Hikoi.
  • 10 October 1975 Waitangi Tribunal is established to hear and report on any Treaty of Watangi breaches.

  • 13 October 1975, Whina Cooper presents a Memorial of Right, signed by 200 kuia (elderly Maori woman) and kaumatua (Maori elder) and petition with 60,000 signed signtures to (at the time) prime minster, Bill Rowling about their fustration about the goverment's handling of maori issues.
