  • Female cardinals choose a male mate based in their ornamentation such as the size of his face mask and, the color of his plumage and bill. They also do something called mate feeding and this is when the male cardinal picks up a seed and places his beak right against a females to the point where there touching so that he can feed her.
  • Incubation
  • Cardinals are monogamous animals so they pretty much mate for life. The females mostly do the building of the nest with some assistance from the male. She uses Small twigs, strips of bark, grasses, and leaves gathered by both the male and female are woven together by the female and then lined with soft grasses and animal hair.
  • Hatchlings
  • It only takes cardinals 11-13 days to lay their eggs. Her eggs are Grayish white, buffy white, or greenish white speckled with pale gray to brown.
  • Leaving home
  • The female cardinal usually incubates their eggs for about 12-13 days while the male goes out brings back resources for the mother. This is a very dangerous time since they can often abandon their nests if they are disturbed.
  • They usually come out a grey-ish color since they are hatchlings and don't have their feathers yet. But interesting fact is that only male cardinals turn red after they molt their light brown feathers after 12 months.
  • This is a very short process for them to grow up but they leave 9-11 days after they hatch. The wild is honestly really brutal when you think about it.
