- She was explaining to the runaways that they could not be found. She is determined to make it to Canada, because she knows they can't be caught. This means Harriet Tubman is determined.
- She told them of others who'd escaped, and the others listen as she tells them stories and sings hymns out of her hymn book. It shows she's motherly and not rough.
