It's time for our annual review of the Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in Florida.
Realizing this could be a little, um... boring, the use of these little cartoon characters is an attempt to engage you.
While the formal version is attached, this comic approach provides the highlights!
The most important idea is that, like it or not, teachers are held to a higher standard because of their influence on children.
Note: None of these characters are intentionally representative of actual PKY faculty members, even if this one does look a little like someone we know...
A few of our favorite things (a/k/a our values): every person's worth & dignity the pursuit of truth commitment to excellence acquisition of knowledge the nurturing of democratic citizenship
The biggest deal of all -- the student and the development of the student’s potential. In other words, keeping the main thing, the main thing!
TO DO LIST: Separate your own beliefs from those of the school and UF. Refuse bribes.
TO DO LIST cont.: Refrain from taking advantage of students.
AND... Be honest, fair, and objective without harassing, embarrassing or discriminating against students.
Oh, yeah... Also, play nicely with your colleagues. After all, we're all in this together!
(Hey, I think this is that sandbox they asked me about in my interview!)
Our job: •Provide a safe place for kids to learn -- physically, mentally, and emotionally safe. •Give them opportunities to be independent learners without holding them back. •Make sure we are exposing them to diverse points of view.
We are also supposed to... •Objectively teach subject matter without distorting or suppressing information. •Avoid any intentional embarrassment or disparagement toward our students. •Protect students' legal rights. •Make sure our relationships with students are appropriate, not placing them at any disadvantage.
Avoid discrimination or harassment based on any personal characteristics (race, color, religion, sex, age, nationality, ethnicity, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, physical condition, social/family background; if others are engaging in these practices, we should step in and speak up to protect the victims. Protect students' privacy and keep records, etc. confidential.
Be honest in dealings with colleagues; treat them as you would want to be treated. Allow colleagues to exercise their political and civil rights freely.
I hate when I get trapped in a gym locker...
The educator: Shall not engage in harassment or discriminatory conduct which unreasonably interferes with an individual's performance of professional or work responsibilities or with the orderly processes of education or which creates a hostile, intimidating, abusive, offensive, or oppressive environment; and, further, shall make reasonable effort to assure that each individual is protected from such harassment or discrimination. Shall not make malicious or intentionally false statements about a colleague.
It's not cool to use coercion or bribery to sway colleagues for your own benefit. Be honest about your professional qualifications, position, and activities. When providing recommendations or endorsements, be honest in these as well.
If you make a mistake, admit it. If you get arrested or are charged with drug possession or child abuse, you have 48 hours to let your administrator know. This is not an admission of guilt.
If your own kids attend PKY: • Follow the procedures that would be followed by any other parent if you have concerns about curriculum, instruction, assessment, discipline, or counseling. If your child is in a course that you are teaching, make arrangements for a colleague to conduct and grade your child's assessments.
Social Media Considerations: • Remember that “friending” your personal child = "friending" your child’s friends. This may cause you to be aware of information that requires mandatory reporting. •Keep your personal and professional accounts separate, realizing that as an educator everything you post is viewed with a higher level of scrutiny. •As a member of the PKY faculty, your online presence is linked to the school; think before you post.
In order to document your completion of this "training," please reply to the email, signifying that you have read through the comic strip, scanned over the document, and reflected on your professional practices.
The original document from which most of this was copied (though not in cute cartoon format!) has been attached to this email.
"Well, that was a little cheesy." "Yeah, but it beats sitting through another meeting."
THANKS FOR PLAYING ALONG!
