  • Yes, I do, he was lovely, very friendly. Seemed a bit old to be setting up a business like that though, if I recall he was in his early 60’s already! I couldn’t fathom why he was doing it, he should be looking forward to retirement and not have the stress associated with that sort of work. When I questioned him on that he said he needed the money and who am I to question that! What did he want today, is there an issue with the business?
  • Good morning, Tracy – while you were away from your desk earlier I took a call from Raymond Francis, do you remember him? You helped him last year to set up his new business, a youth counselling service? He counsels at risk teenagers – do you recall him?
  • Let’s talk back at your desk shall we?
  • Sounds ominous!
  • You will never believe it, he was charged and released on bail yesterday.
  • Oh, my goodness, what for?
  • I don’t know Richard, I really despise paedophiles, for personal reasons I’d rather not discuss; I don’t know if I can act. Although I want to learn new things, criminal law has never really interested me, especially because of that sort of thing. I'll have to take it to the top and talk to Gerald.
  • Apparently, he sexually assaulted one of his male clients, well only one has come forward so far, I suppose. He wants you to represent him because you know him from previous dealings with him. I’ve made him an appointment for later today.
  • Well he’s specifically asked for you to be on the case because he felt you were honest and upfront with him when setting up the business. Maybe just hear him out, remember innocent until proven guilty and all that!
  • I suppose I have no choice but to see him then...
  • Hi Raymond, thanks for coming in. Richard has explained a little of your new matter to me. I’ve read your QP9’s which were emailed over this morning. I have to tell you up front, criminal law is not my area of expertise. Whilst I did help set up your business for you, I have had very little experience in these sorts of matters. It is most likely our Principal Solicitor, Gerald, will handle your matter himself. He has many many years experience and will be your best option.
  • Can I still contact you about the matter though, will you help out with the case?
  • I actually offered one of my clients the granny flat at my house. He was about to be evicted from his accommodation and I felt sorry for him, so I offered him the granny flat. We had struck up a good friendship over the months and from our previous communications I thought he was interested in me. Anyway, one night I ended up intimately touching him, he seemed to be frozen to the spot but did not reject my advances, so I continued. The next thing I know I have the police knocking on my door and I’m being charged with sexual assault of a minor! I thought he was into it, so am totally shocked by all of this.
  • I can take your initial instructions and then pass them on to Gerald, but beyond that I cannot help you. What have you got to say about the charges against you?
  • OK Raymond I get the general idea of where you are coming from. I will definitely be referring this on to Gerald and he and his team will look after you. I will not be able to assist at all but wish you the best of luck with it.
  • Thank you for your time and being upfront with me. I understand why you are referring me to Gerald.
  • Thank you for your honesty. I do know your husband's story and that criminal law is not what you want to do. I will take the matter on myself, so do not worry about it. You did the right thing referring it to me.
  • Gerald, as I explained I do not want to act for Raymond Francis, his crime is repugnant to me and goes against my moral standards. You already know my reasons why, a paedophile practically ruined my husband's life. I just cannot do it.
  • No problem Tracy, my door is always open, thank you for coming to me and bringing the matter to my attention..
  • Thank you for your understanding Gerald, it is a huge relief to me.
