- In this alternate, dystopian fiction set in the 90's England, I Kathy H, am the protagonist. I narrate this story in a chatty, informal voice. I take you back through my memories (as unreliable and muddled as they are) and forth, through my present life as a carer, telling you the narrative from my perspective.
- Ruth, Tommy and I, grew up in an exclusive boarding school, Hailsham, We were maintained by Guardians who groomed us for our purpose in life - to be become donors.
- During our meticulous education, alongside the weekly medical examinations, a great deal of emphasis was put upon health education, sex education and art. The best art was chosen for an elusive 'gallery.'
- We were often told we were 'special', different and unique', although we did not understand, or question why, or how.
- The first instance we realised us being 'different' was not positive was during an encounter with, Madame, a regular visitor who ran the gallery. We realised that Madame avoided us due to a fearful aversion to us, like arachnophobia.
- Miss Lucy, a short-term Guardian, tries to tell us what it really means to be clones, and what that meant for our futures. She tells us to give up on dreams of living a normal human life, because as clones, we were destined to donate our vital organs until we 'complete' (a euphemism for death.)
