  • Ava sat on a bench in the park, lost in thought. She had been pondering her own problems for so long that she hadn't noticed the world around her. Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream pierced the air, shattering her reverie.
  • Ava's heart raced as she looked around, trying to locate the source of the scream. She saw an elderly man, Michael, collapsed on the ground, clutching his chest in agony. People were gathering around him, but no one seemed to know what to do.
  • Ava's mind went into overdrive as she rushed to Michael's side. She didn't think about whether or not she should help him, it was just a natural reaction. She checked his pulse and called 911, all while trying to comfort him and keep him calm.
  • Omg, are you okay. Stay calm the ambulance is on the way
  • The ambulance arrived quickly, and Michael was rushed to the hospital. Ava sat on the bench, still in shock from what had just happened. She realized that she didn't know Michael, but it didn't matter. She had an ethical responsibility to help him in his time of need, and she was glad that she had acted on it.
  • Everything will be okay!
  • I'm so grateful I could help that man out today!
  • As Ava walked away from the park, she couldn't help but think about how one scream had changed her entire day. She was grateful for the reminder that we are all responsible for each other, and that sometimes, it's not a decision we make, but rather an automatic response. The scream had been a call to action, and she was proud that she had answered it.
  • Anything Helps
  • Ava was walking to work, lost in her thoughts, when she saw a homeless man sitting on the sidewalk, holding a cardboard sign that read "Anything Helps". She couldn't help but notice his face, worn and tired from a life on the streets.
  • Anything Helps
  • Here's a few dollars sir.
  • Ava stopped in front of the man, and debated with herself on how to respond. She felt a responsibility to help him, but at the same time, she didn't want to encourage him to continue begging. She dug through her purse and found a few dollars to give him.
  • Should I have given him more?
  • Anything Helps
  • The man thanked Ava for the money, but his eyes spoke volumes about his need for more. Ava felt a pang of guilt as she walked away. She wondered if she had done enough to help him. She debated with herself about whether or not she should have given him more.
  • I didn't give him enough. I should have given more
  • As Ava arrived at work, she couldn't shake the image of the mans face from her mind. She realized that all face-to-face encounters are ethical, because they remind us of our responsibility for the Other. She defended her decision to give him money to herself, but she knew that there was more she could do to help.
  • Ava left work that day with a renewed sense of purpose. She went to a nearby shelter and signed up to volunteer her time. She also made a donation to a local homeless advocacy group. As she walked back to her car, she saw Michael again, still begging for money. This time, she didn't hesitate. She walked over to him and offered to buy him lunch. As they sat together and talked, Ava realized that sometimes the best way to help someone is simply to be there for them. She left feeling grateful for the reminder that it all starts with the human face, especially the face of someone in need.
