  • Everyone is born with different traits and people can use those traits to reach greater achievements.
  • Practice is what helps someone improve at a skill and surpass others in that certain skill.
  • In this scene, Thomas tries out his first jump and passes. Epstein writes, "Thomas cleared 6’8.25” on his first attempt, qualifying for the national championships." (Epstein). This supports the first main idea because this shows how a talent like Thomas's can foreshadow events of greatness in the future.
  • In this scene, Thomas earned fourth place at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. Epstein writes, "He placed fourth in a world-class field, a result that actually confused him because he did not yet understand how tiebreakers work in high jump and thought he was in third place until the results were announced." (Espstein). This supports the second main idea because this shows that even talent alone can't get you to the top without practice.
  • In this scene, Thomas earned first place in the World Championships. Epstein writes, "The guy in pole vault shoes who thinks high jump is “kind of boring” was crowned the 2007 world champion. On his winning jump, Thomas raised his center of mass to 8’2”." (Epstein). This supports the second main idea because this shows that after taking some practice, you can become better and better at a certain skill.
  • In this scene, Ishikawa and Hunter show how Thomas's Achilles Tendon supports him in competitions. Esptein writes, "Hunter has found that a longer Achilles tendon allows an athlete to get more power from what’s called the “stretch shortening cycle,” basically compression and subsequent decompression of the springlike tendon. " (Epstein). This supports the first main idea because this shows how people can use what makes them different to make them special.
  • In this scene, Thomas continues to remain the same after his debut. Epstein writes, "Interestingly, Thomas has not improved one centimeter in the six years since he entered the professional circuit." (Epstein). This supports both the first and second main ideas because this shows how both talent and practice can get you to where you re now.
