  • Today I will explain similarities and differences about electromagnetic and mechanical waves.
  • Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • Electromagnetic waves don't need a medium to pass through while Mechanical Waves do need a medium such as gas, solid, or liquid. They both also only carry energy and not matter.
  • Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • For Electromagnetic waves they are only transverse waves, there is also something called the Electromagnetic Spectrum where from the left - right the wavelengths get smaller but the frequencies get higher which is an inverse relationship. Also at the middle of the spectrum is the visible light spectrum which we are able to see.
  • Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • For Mechanical Waves it can be either transverse or longitudinal. Longitudinal are parallel to the direction of the wave travel, while transverse waves the vibrations are at a right angle to the direction of the wave travel. For longitudinal waves they have something called a rarefaction and compression where the compression is the region where it has the highest pressure and a rarefaction is the lowest pressure. The distance between a rarefaction or compression with another is the wavelength.
  • Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • Now for the parts of a wave. The amplitude is the height of a wave from its resting point. The resting point is the position where the wave started. The wavelength is the distance from one crest or trough from the adjacent other trough or crest. The crest is the top point of the wave and the trough is the bottom point. The frequency is the amount of waves that passes a given point in 1 second. The height of a wave is the distance between the crest and trough.A compression
  • Electromagnetic and Mechanical Waves
  • Lastly the relationships between amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and energy. The higher the frequency the higher the energy. The higher the frequency is, the lower the wavelength. The higher the amplitude the higher the energy.
