  • N.W.S.A
  • Some men considered Anthony's idea, and that women shouldbe able to vote.
  • Anthony started a campaign in 1853 to defend property rights for women. In 1856, Anthony joined the American Anti-Slavery Society and gave speeches to abolitionists in New York. She believed that African men and women deserved to vote, and refused to promote testimonial amendments.
  • This lead to a violent split in the Women's Rights Movement, and Anthony believed that African Americans shouldn't get the right to vote until women were granted access to voting. At this time, the NWSA was formed, and this group of women supported citizenship rights for previous slaves. In 1890, both these groups collided to make the National American Women Sufferage Association or NAWSA. Anthony became the second president of this association and continued to fight for women's rights until her passing in 1906.
