- Jonas’ first memory of love makes him reconsider the community’s system, about the fact that he has never seen his grandparents. In fact, no one had seen their grandparents in their community.
- With the memory of warfare, he see the harmless game of gun tag the students play and suddenly breaks into tears, remembering the injured boy. He tried telling Asher about this, but yet again, he doesn’t understand.

- One day, it was Jonas’ father’s turn to preform the release ceremony of an identical twin. Wondering what happens at a release, Jonas is shown the recording of said event; he is horrified to find out that release is death.
- Jonas plans with the Giver and decide on escaping to Elsewhere and letting his memories return to the people. However, the night of his escape, he discovers that Gabriel is planned to be released; he takes her with him.
- Every time of crisis, Jonas pulls through and continues to comfort Gabriel with his dwindling supply of happy memories.
- Eventually, Jonas finds the snow hill that started it all. He hopped on the sled with Gabriel in his arms, and Just like the first memory he received, he slid downhill.
