  • Causes of the First Opium War
  • It was the British first visit to China, to meet the Emperor (Quinlong). The British brought all sorts of goods to bribe the Emperor in trading their goods, especially tea. However, seeing that Lord McCartney wasn't kowtowing, the Emperor declined his offer and told him to leave his palace. This made McCartney furious.
  • Causes of the Second Opium War
  • As the British requested the trade of tea, the Chinese wasn't buying much in return, so the British smuggled Opium to China. This made the British earning millions of money. However, seeing how the Chinese was getting more addictive to Opium, Lin Seshu tried confiscating the import of Opium.
  • HongKong handover
  • Charles Elliot was furious in noticing how the Chinese was banning imports of Opium, so the British declared a war between China (whom thought they would win). He told his men to fleet to the Island of Joe in 1814 and demanded surrender, but the Chinese refused to. In 1840, July 5th the Royal Navy bombarded the islands, which in a few minutes it was completely destroyed.
  • After the defeat of the First Opium War, the British was dissatisfied with how the Chinese failed to pay concessions to them. Moreover, the British had a huge trade deficit because of great tea consumption. As a result, these became triggers to the Second Opium War. The Second Opium war wasn't mainly about opium, it was about reinforcing open trade and showing that Europeans were much more dominant.
  • Due to how the Chinese lost the battle with the British, The Chinese had to give up a piece of land to Britain. They handed over Hong Kong Island in 1842, which was during the First Opium War. Then added Kowloon and Stonecutters Island in 1860 during the Second Opium War.
