- A developmental pediatric and speech-language evaluation at Cohen Children's Medical Center concluded that Timothy had autism.
- One day, Timothy attended a private clinic for speech-language therapy . Unfortunately, his sessions were online due to Covid-19 and could not sit still for even 5 minutes.
- One day in the kitchen, Timothy wanted a snack from his mom so he grabbed her hand and pulled her to the kitchen. His mom wondered what it was that he wanted, Could it be juice? milk? cookies?Timothy stomped his feet with each guess she made until she grabbed the banana. Timothy loves bananas!
- At Timothy's next doctor appointment with his pediatrician, she recommended an AAC evaluation. At this appointment, one of the speech pathologists who works at the Center for Child Communication, suggested an AAC device for Timothy and a plan was implemented. For the next few weeks, Timothy trialed with the AAC device.
- The next several weeks, Timothy and his speech-langauge therapist worked on communicating using the AAC device. She showed him the different categories and visuals. Fortunately, Timothy was a quick learner. His speech-language therapist was so impressed at how fast he was able to catch on. Eventually, he learned to mimic the device and create sentences such as I want play.
- At last, Timothy is able to communicate with his family with his AAC device. Soon, he will be able to use it in no time to communicate with his teachers and peers when he starts school!
