  • School is an agent of socialization. Socialization is the process of internalizing social norms and ideologies. Social norms are informal rules that govern our behaviour. In this case, Ben is teaching his classmate the ideology of stereotypes. From a functionalist perspective, socialization can be considered a latent function of school meaning that it was not intended. An intended and also manifest function of school for instance, is teaching kids how to do math.
  • Scene 6: Karen has Questions
  • So, is Chinese my race?
  • The principal is showing prejudice through stereotyping and he is also displaying micro-aggression. Micro-aggression is a minor form of racial discrimination occurring in daily interaction. Usually it goes unnoticed by the person committing it.
  • After Karen tells her mother about the details of what happened today, Karen's mother explains the concept of race and how people can be treated differently due to their race. Race distinguishes people into different groups based on physical characteristics. Race is a social construct, meaning it is made up by society and does not have biological basis.
  • Karen's mother explains that ethnicity is not the same thing as race. Ethnicity and ethnic groups are based on sharing language, tradition, culture, ancestors, and customs. Race is purely based on physical characteristics.
  • No honey, that is our ethnicity. Ethnicity and race are different.
