  • What a beautiful necklace!
  • Mathilde and her husband were a normal middle-class family. Her husband, Monsieur Losel tries his best to provide for his wife and tries to give her everything she wants but she's never satisfied. One day, Monsieur brings home an invitation for a formal event, hoping it will make Mathilde happy. However, Mathilde Loisel is not happy as she has nothing to wear or accessorize herself with.
  • Climax
  • Ten years later...
  • Mathilde has nothing "fancy" to wear. Her husband gives her money to buy a dress but, being the ungrateful person she is, she still isn't satisfied and asks her wealthy friend for a necklace to borrow.
  • Falling Action
  • My life has been miserable because of that necklace I borrowed 10 years ago...
  • Mathilde arrives at the ball with her husband and friends. Mathilde was the fanciest woman in the ball, impressing everyone around, she felt beautiful.
  • Resolution
  • Oh no! My friend, that necklace was fake!
  • After partying at the ball, Mathilde comes back home, only to find that the diamond necklace that was on her neck disappeared. She and Monsieur Loisel looked all over the place for her borrowed necklace but failed to find it. Instead of telling Madame, they tell her that the necklace is being mended and decides to buy an identical necklace to return.
  • After paying 36,000 Frans for a replacement necklace, Mathilde runs into Madame and finally tells her what happened. Hoping to be able to return the necklace without Madame being mad, Mathilde is shocked by her response.
  • Madame Forestier tells Mathilde that the necklace was just costume jewelry and not worth anything. After Mathilde and her husband spent all of their hard working money on a replacement, they're left with no money and an expensive piece of jewlery.
