- The sonnet shows how a man works hard all week and while tired he still finds a way to get up early on Sunday morning to prepare a comfortable home for his family
- oh my so early, so tired, must get the house warm for the family. Church is awaiting us .....
- Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueback cold then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fire blazes
- This is where the author explains and recognizes that his father has sacrificed to make them comfortable, and even shined his dress shoes.
- I'd wake and hear the cold, splintering breaking .
- This shows how the family slept in and were comfortable and when they did awake the home was warm and comfortable.
- The sonnet uses the poetic device of imagery to get the point across. The descriptive words explain and immerse you in the feeling , While short very effective in making you understand the selfishness of the father .
- The turn in the sonnet is when the author explains speaking indifferently to him the one who had driven out the cold where the author understands what his father has done to bring comfort to the family with little or no appreciation. What a selfless act his father had done with no expectations of recognition
- Speaking indifferently to him,who had driven out the coldand polished my good shoes as well.
- The theme of the poem is how as a parent one would give so unselfishly and how lonely that can be when no-one says thank you.
