  • The Shipman's Tale is the 17th story in The Canterbury Tales.
  • Climax
  • A rich merchant has an unusually beautiful wife. Their very nice house is often filled with guests. One of the most recent guests is a handsome, young monk who is a close friend with the merchant. 
  • Falling Action
  • One day the monk encounters the beautiful wife in the garden. He questions her and she agrees to tell him about her marital issues. The monk agrees to give her money to buy clothes. He draws the wife towards him and kisses her madly confessing his desire to for her.
  • Resolution
  • At dinner the monk asks the merchant for a loan to purchase cattle. The kind merchant gladly gives the monk the money. The next day the merchant leaves and the wife and the monk make an agreement on their own to pay back the loan.
  • The wife agrees that for exchange of the money she will give him a different way to pay it back. She agrees to spend the night in bed with the monk. If he sleeps with her then he will not owe any money to the merchant from the loan.
  • Later on the merchant stops by to see the monk. The monk explains that he doesn't owe him anything because he already repaid it to the wife. The merchant goes to the wife and she explains that he repaid her but she spent the money. She says she will repay him not in money but in bed. The merchant does not get mad but he forgives her.
