  • How the hell am I going to move all of these oranges from this side of the store to the other side?
  • Seriously, haven't they taught you anything in science class…education these days!
  • Well, attitude not helpful - I do know something about this, come to think of it - I could use a complex machine - a WHEEL BARROW that is!
  • Okay.
  • Hello! I'm Billy Jo Bob the scientist and engineer! I am here to teach you about simple and compound machines, specifically the wheel barrow that you mentioned!
  • A wheelbarrow is composed of two different types of simple machines. A simple machine is a man made object that is used to create leverage, or to multiply the input of the force applied by the user. To put it simply, simple machines make it easier to do tasks that would otherwise be difficult.
  • Thank you, Billy Jo Bob. You are very informative!
  • Now it's my turn to do the talking! Okay, one of the simple machines found in a wheel barrow is a wheel and axle. A wheel and axle is a round circle with a rod attached to it. The a wheel creates a mimimal amount of friction, allowing it to move smoothly on a flat surface. The other part of a Wheelbarrow is a lever. A lever is a bar that pivots on a fixed point, called a fulcrum. Levers can be used in many ways. Examples of levers are seesaws, scissors, chopsticks, and of course, a wheelbarrow is a lever too!
  • Together these two simple machines make a wheel barrow. A wheel barrow consists of (at least) two wheels on an axe which is the fulcrum of the lever. The handles of a wheel barrow is where the effort force, or the force applied is. Wheel barrows can hold objects inside of them and transport those objects to another location.
  • All right. Now that we have explained what a wheelbarrow is lets make one use it to move those oranges!
  • yes
  • TEN MINUTES LATER...........
  • We've moved The oranges with the wheelbarrow that we made. It was easy to push the wheelbarrow, even though there was a lot of oranges. Thats the power of simple machines!
  • It looks like Billy Jo Bob left. I forgot to thank him for his help. Where did he go?
  • Fun fact: Levers were first described by greek mathematician Archimedes in 260 BCE. However, levers have been used since ancient times. One example is the catapult, a weapon used in ancient rome. Evidence shows that some of the first wheels were created in Mesopotamia 3500 BCE. They were not used a simple machines, but instead pottery. It was not until later that wheels were used as simple machines. David Einhorn & Billy Jo Bob
