- The suitors watch as Odysseus in his hidden form attempts to string the bow.
- ¨A bow lover!¨
- ¨See how he handles it, the sly old buzzard!¨
- ¨May his fortune grow an inch for every inch he bends it!¨
- While the crowd of suitors laugh at the “old beggar” Odysseus, he swiftly strings his bow with no issue.
- Odysseus carefully assembles his bow, readying the arrow, while everyone stares and watches closely.
- " 'And Odysseus took his time, turing the bow, tapping it, every inch, for boring that termites might have made while the master of the weapon was aboard' "(21. 95-97).
- Odysseus, bow in hand, shots an arrow that cleanly flies through each of the axe rings, doing what the suitors believed to be impossible.
- " '..when with quiet hands upon his instrument he draws between his thumb and forefinger a sweet new string upon a peg: so effortlessly Odysseus in one motion strung the bow' "(21. 107-111).
