- George and Lennie are on their way to the ranch where they are going to work for the next few months. After what happened in Weed, George is afraid that Lennie may accidentally get into trouble again so he makes sure to tell Lennie to not do anything bad. On their way to the ranch, Lennie finds a mouse and hides it in his pocket but when George finds out he is carrying the dead mouse, he takes it and throws it into an open field. This makes Lennie upset because all he wanted to do was pet the mouse.
- When they finally arrive at the ranch, Lennie and George meet Candy first, who greets them in the bunkhouse. They meet all of the other men including Curley. Even though Lennie has done nothing to Curley, Curley already has a problem with him and kind of sees him as a threat. The rest of the men seem pretty nice.
- Curley comes into the bunkhouse apologizing to Slim for accusing him of being with his wife. When he is done apologizing, the men start to tease Curley about how insecure he is about his wife. Curley sees Lennie smiling and assumes that he is laughing at him and starts to attack Lennie. Lennie defends himself against Curley and crushes his fist.
- A few days later, Lennie is in the barn with Curley's wife and they are talking about his and George's dream of owning a farm. Lennie starts to touch Curley's wife's hair because it is very soft and silky, like his puppy. He starts to hold onto her hair and when she starts yelling at Lennie to let go, he grips her hair even harder and puts his hand over her mouth. Lennie accidentally snaps her neck and when he knows that she is dead, he decides to run away where George told him to hide if he ever got in trouble.
- Candy finds Curley's wife dead in the barn and calls the other men over. All of the men are upset and Curley is very mad. He knows that Lennie killed his wife and he wants to get revenge. He tells one of the men to get a gun and they all go looking for Lennie so that Curley can kill him.
- George is the first one to find Lennie and when he finds him, he is sitting by the deep pool of the Salinas River. Lennie is very happy to see George and starts to beg for his forgiveness. George knows that he has to kill Lennie so he tells him to face the other way and he starts to tell Lennie about their dream. George then fires the gun and is forced to move on without Lennie by his side.
