  • Holden failing all his classes causing him to drop out of Pencey.
  • Hey Jane! Ready for our date?
  • Holden looking over the football field on a hill after loosing all the team's fencing gear.
  • Have you guys already seen this movie?
  • Maybe...
  • Mr. Spencer explains that he has Failed all classes “Life is a game” and he needs to learn how to play by the rules.
  • Mr. Spencer lectures him about the horrible Egyptian essay he turned in.
  • 
  • Holden sits there reading ”Out of Africa” while wearing his new RED hunting hat
  • Ackley is being very annoying until Stradlater enters the room and makes him want to leave.
  • What is this?!? This has nothing to do with the assignment! No wonder you're getting expelled
  • Stradlater goes on a date with Jane who played checkers with Holden when they were kids.
  • It's a boys night out with Ackley and Mal Brossard.
  • Holden is having writers block but then writes about the poems that Allie wrote in his baseball glove.
  • Sleep tight, ya morons!
  • Holden having a flashback about his little brother Allie who died too soon from leukemia.
  • Holden remembers the night of Allie's death and his breakdown. Holden breaks all the windows in the garage with his bare hands.

  • Where do the ducks in the Central Park Lagoon go in the winter?
  • Stradlater hates what Holden wrote about!
  • Holden attacks Stradlater when he refuses to tell about his date with Jane. Stradlater then punches Holden in the face causing him to sleep in Ackley's room.
  • Holden goes to Ackley's room because his roommate is out of town. He cannot sleep because he is imagining Jane and Stradlater fooling around.

  • He devises a plan to sneak off to New York until his parents find out about his expulsion from Pencey.
  • The mother of Holden's classmate, Ernest Morrow, sits next to him on the train to New York.
  • He pretends to actually like Ernest. He says the reason he's there is because he is having a brain tumor operation.
  • Holden has no one but the taxi driver to talk to. However, the taxi driver does not feel the same.

  • Hey Jane! Got any cigarettes????
  • ...
  • Holden tries to arrange a date with Faith Cavendish to meet him at the party. She refuses and tries to reschedule but Holden does not want to wait that long. 
  • I used to date D.B.!!
  • ...I got to go Bye!!
  • Before he leaves his room at the Edmont’s nightclub he thinks about calling Phoebe, his little sister.Phoebe is very intelligent, and listens to what Holden has to say. Her childish innocence is the only thing that Holden feels happy about.

  •  Phoebe’s one flaw is that she is perhaps too emotional.
  • Hey Man, I'll send up a prostitute to your room for 5 dollars. If ya want. 
  • These three women visiting from Seattle are at first amused by Holden but then laugh at him because of his attempt to act older. 
  • Im recovering from an operation on my clavichord.
  • Holden goes to the Lobby and reminisces about Jane. Jane was the only person to whom Holden ever showed Allie’s baseball glove. They were close and occasionally held hands.

  • One day, Jane’s alcoholic stepfather came out to the porch where Holden and Jane were playing checkers and asked Jane for cigarettes.

  • Holden runs into D.B.'s ex-girlfriend, Lillian SImmons. This encounter forces Holden to want to leave the nightclub because all he sees in her is phoniness.
  • Give us the money!!!
  • Holden thinks about his gloves that were stolen at Pencey and imagines a violent confrontation with the thief.
  • Holden is heading up to his room and gets an offer from the elevator operator.
  • Sure that sounds good.
  • Holden has anxiety when the prostitute, Sunny, enters. He takes off her dress but says he's unable to have sex with her. He pays her $5 out of $10 and then asks her to leave.
  • After she leaves Holden smokes a cigarette while remembering when he excluded Allie from the bb gun game.

  • He gets woken up by Maurice (the elevator operator) banging on his door demanding the rest of Sunny’s money.

  • He beats him while Sunny grabs the money out of Holden’s wallet.
  • absolutely not!
  • That morning he calls Sally asking for a date. 
  • Uhh...Hey Sally...Do you want to go on a date with me?
  • He checks out of the hotel and heads to Grand Central Station where he leaves his stuff inside of a locker. He is worried he will lose it and mentions that his father hates it when Holden loses things.
  • Holden gets breakfast at a sandwich bar. He meets 2 nuns and gives them $10 but ends up regretting it because he needs that money.
  • Holden goes for a walk and thinks about his selflessness. He walks down Broadway and wants to buy a record for Phoebe called "Little Shirley Beans”
  • Holden sees a boy singing in the street which reminds him of the innocence that kid has. This makes Holden smile.

  • Holden walks to the park where he meets a friend of Phoebe’s. She tells him she thinks Phoebe's on a field trip to the museum.
  • He walks to the museum and notices that time stands still there. Everytime he goes to the museum he changes but it stays the same.
  • Sally and Holden meet up and head on their way to the show. Holden and sally make out in the cab. Holden is angry with the performers because he feels they are complete phonies. He gets angry with Sally when she starts flirting with another boy.
  • Holden takes Sally Ice skating which he believes is only to show off her “cute ass”. He does not mind though. Holden mentions that they should run away together and Sally calls him crazy.
