  • Algernon asks Cecily to marry him after he confesses his love.

  • this shows dramatic irony because the readers knows that he doesn't really love Cecily because he's not Ernest.
  • Cecily tells Algernon that it's been a dream of hers to marry someone named Ernest.
  • "You must not laugh at me, darling, but it had always been a girlish dream off mine to love someone whose name was Ernest." (76)
  • this shows dramatic irony because readers knows that his name is not really Ernest and he is Algernon.
  • Algernon tells Cecily that he will be back later.

  • Algernon asks to read Cecily's diary but she tells him that she is making copies to the public and hopes he gets a copy.

  • this shows situational irony because when someone has a diary they usually keep it hidden from the public.
  • Cecily says that if someone has something mean to say, they should say it candidly (straightforward).
  • "Pray do!" I think that whenever one has anything unpleasant to say, one should always be quite candid" (80)
  • This shows situational irony because when someone has something not nice to say, people will tell them to stay quiet but Cecily is saying to be the opposite.
