- The mystery novel Breakout by Kate Messner is about middle school girl Nora from Wolf Creek, New York. Where she has to combat the struggles of small-town life and the escape of two inmates.
- Falling Action
- Two inmates escape the maximum security prison in the town. Elidee is a new student at Nora's school and her mom isn't being accepted by others in the community. People are bullying Elidee because of her skin color.
- Resolution
- The inmates are spotted farther away from town and they don't need to worry about them anymore. Nora, Elidee, and Lizzie (Nora's best friend) have to work together to win the race.
- Theme
- Why'd you do that?
- The prisoners are finally caught and Nora is starting to realize some bias in her community.
- Nora starts to advocate for fair rules for all. Additionally, Nora is finally creating a change in her community.
- When you made us take of our bags because of our friends skin color that was not ok.
- Nora learns about the communities bias and starts to advocate for fair rules for everyone. If you see wrong you can always battle it.
